Marriage: 10 tips for a blissful relationship

Often in marriage, especially in the early years, there is a choice: You can be right or you can be happy - not both. Choose wisely.

As a friend of mine said after his first year of marriage: "I finally figured out that the sun will come up tomorrow if we do it her way."

1. Learn the gentle art of cooperation. Related to wanting to be right, competition in a marriage is corrosive - it eats away at all the good stuff.

2.If you are going to compete, compete together to have the very best marriage you can have.

3. Talk about the important stuff. Most couples spend more time planning a vacation than they do planning for their relationship. Create a relationship vision by asking: "If we could have it exactly like we want, how would it be?" Build from there. If you get stuck, ask or hire someone to help.

4. Forgive as much or more than you would like to be forgiven. Sometimes forgiveness is a gift you give yourself, especially when you do not feel like it. Forgiveness can release you from the pain of the offense.

5. Celebrate what you want to see more of. Appreciation can go a long way.

6. Listen to the heart more than you listen to the words. Focusing on the words can lead to endless and meaningless debate: "No, that did not happen on Tuesday, it happened on Monday!" Focusing on the heart behind the words can lead to resolution of conflict and to taking care of each other.

7. Don't be a Darren Stevens. In the old sitcom "Bewitched," Samantha merely had to wiggle her nose to make incredible things happen. Darren was always trying to get her to stop using her magical powers.
Even as a little kid, I thought the guy was nuts. He could have had anything he wanted. Instead he tried to get Sam to stifle her gifts. Encourage your partner in her gifts.

8. Check out your communication. While it's easy for two people to talk to each other, sometimes it is more difficult to really communicate with each other. Practice these two sentences: "What I think you're saying is . . . did I miss anything?" and "Please, tell me what you think I just said."

9. Take responsibility for your contributions to the struggle. We've yet to see a relationship problem that didn't have two sets of fingerprints all over it. Yet, we tend to focus on what the other person is doing. "If only you would . . . .,then everything would be OK."
One of the quickest paths to frustration and failure is to try to change someone else. Take responsibility to change your contribution to the problem, whether it's what you are doing and/or how you respond to what your partner is doing.

10. Don't assume that just because you are married, you know how to be married. Pay attention to what works for other couples. Read all you can. Go to seminars. Everybody needs a coach. Find one. It's a lot less expensive than divorce, financially and emotionally.

Sakit yang degil

Sakit itu tetap di situ. Tidak ingin pergi. Tidak ingin hilang. Sebaliknya harapan semakin hari kian culas. Sesungguhnya apa pun suratannya, saya reda!

A fickle heart and bitterness...

When will I see you again?
You left with no goodbye, not a single word was said,
No final kiss to seal any seams,
I had no idea of the state we were in,

I know I have a fickle heart and bitterness,
And a wandering eye, and a heaviness in my head,

But don't you remember?
Don't you remember?
The reason you loved me before,
Baby, please remember me once more,

When was the last time you thought of me?
Or have you completely erased me from your memory?
I often think about where I went wrong,
The more I do, the less I know,

But I know I have a fickle heart and bitterness,
And a wandering eye, and a heaviness in my head,

But don't you remember?
Don't you remember?
The reason you loved me before,
Baby, please remember me once more,

Gave you the space so you could breathe,
I kept my distance so you would be free,
And hope that you find the missing piece,
To bring you back to me,

Why don't you remember?
Don't you remember?
The reason you loved me before,
Baby, please remember me once more,

When will I see you again?

Maggi Ketam yg sengal ADEH!

Belek-belek menu, something catches my eyes. Maggi Ketam! Hmm macam sedap je. Apalagi terus order semangkuk. Selang beberapa minit, maggi pun sampai. Slurp slurp habis makan, pi lah nak bayar bil di kaunter.

Tuan kedai pun tanya, "Amacam okay tak Maggi? Menjadi tak saya masak?"

What! LOL!

An iftar with Mr Italiano :-P

I had an iftar with an Italian today. What? Yup, an Italian! I guess I am so lucky to befriend an Italian all this while hahaha. Anyway, thanks Mr Italiano for sharing your little secret way back at PPP ITM. I wondered where's that English lecturer now?

By the way, what does an average Italian look like? Well, that depends. Northern, Southern, and Sicilian Italians all are different people. Northern Italians tend to be taller, blue eyed, blond hair, kind of a pinkish skin tone, some kind of Nordic.

While Southern Italians are of olive skin but kind of short.

Sicilians are very dark, have thick wavy black hair, usually kind of short and not to be offensive but have big noses sometimes. Sicilians are the Italians that are mostly seen in the USA. Italians are awesome, very nice and friendly people. Jamie Oliver once said, "Go to Italy and meet the people. They're so awesome and nice to others, even if you're some wierdo from America, they'll still be nice to you" :)

Doa (Fatimah Azzahra) Putri Rasulullah saw

Jangan Engkau biarkan aku bersendirian walaupun hanya sekelip mata... Amin

"I'm okay"

Sometimes when I say, "I'm okay"
I want someone to look me in the eyes
hug me tight and say, "I know you're not!"

La Tahzan. Innallaha ma'ana...

Jangan bersedih

Jika Allah uruskan urusan kita,

Tulislah wasiat ketika sihat

MENULIS wasiat bukan kebiasaan masyarakat kita.

Baginda menjawab, "Tidak." Aku berkata, "Sebahagiannya." Baginda menjawab, "Tidak." Aku berkata, "Sepertiga." Baginda menjawab, "Ya, sepertiga."

THIS IS NOT FUNNY!

This illustration is published in Berita Minggu (Berita Harian). Seriously, it is not funny! The cartoonist and editors should apologize for this.

Making fun of others' suffering is just not right.  Sensitivity is always an issue in this country, but how come some people can SIMPLY overlook this matter!

The Aftermath...

The evening bells have just rung for evening prayer.
Our prayer tonight is
that of gratitude
that our family and neighbours are safe.
But our hearts
are with those families
who cannot say the same,
who will sleep tonight
without a son,
a daughter,
a mother,
a father,
an uncle,
an aunt,
a cousin,
a grandmother,
a grandfather.
Their loss is our loss.
Even the night birds feel it...

Potong Kuku Mengikut Sunnah Dalam Islam

Perlu diketahui bahawa memotong kuku adalah amalan sunat.

Berkata Saidatina Aisyah bermaksud:
Sepuluh perkara dikira sebagai fitrah iaitu memotong misai, memelihara janggut, bersugi, memasukkan air ke hidung, memotong kuku, membasuh sendi-sendi, mencabut bulu ketiak, mencukur bulu ari-ari, bersuci dengan air (beristinja), berkata Zakaria: Aku lupa yang ke-10 kecuali berkumur.
(Riwayat Muslim).

(Riwayat Muslim).

Menurut Imam Shafie:
Sunat memotong kuku sebelum mengerjakan solat Jumaat sepertimana disunatkan mandi, bersugi, berharuman, berpakaian kemas sebelum ke masjid.
Rasulullah S.A.W. bersabda bermaksud:
(Riwayat Ahmad).

Berkata Abu Hurairah R.A. bermaksud:
Nabi Muhammad S.A.W. memotong kuku dan menggunting misai pada hari Jumaat sebelum baginda keluar untuk bersembahyang.
(Riwayat al-Bazzar dan al-Tabrani).
RASULULLAH S.A.W bersabda yang ertinya:-
Barang siapa yang mengerat kukunya pada ;

Hari Rabu :Nescaya keluar daripadanya was-was dan masuk kepadanya kepapaan.

Want to discover your unique talents?

In this article, I will be focusing on how to identify your unique skills and talents, or in other words, your unique intelligence. All of us are born with different intelligences. Some of these are inborn, while others are learnt and discovered along life’s journey. There are many different types of intelligence that we possess. You have to find your unique combination and from there, you would be able to know what your unique talents and skills are as well as your strengths and weaknesses.

1. Linguistic Intelligence involves sensitivity to spoken and written language, the ability to learn and use languages to accomplish certain goals. People who have this intelligence are good with words, and it can be either verbal or non-verbal. Writers, poets, lawyers and speakers are among those that have high linguistic intelligence.

2. Interpersonal Intelligence is the ability to understand, negotiate, influence, persuade and communicate effectively with other people. If you have the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of other people, you probably have this intelligence. Today, it is one of the more sought-after intelligence as people need to work and co-operate with one another. Educators, salespeople, religious and political leaders all have a well-developed interpersonal intelligence.

These are classes that you found interesting and those that you easily excelled in, while others may have found them difficult. These could also be topics that you read beyond your textbooks on your own initiative.

b) Extra-curricular activities
What were the activities that you loved to join, either as an organiser or participant, where you didn’t mind contributing your time, energy and effort? Find out the areas where you had a natural advantage over others, be it in extra-curricular activities or inter-school competitions.

c) Accolades from peers or school mates
For example, some people are naturally good at entertaining people. Some may be good at drawings (the next Lat in the making perhaps?), some good dancers, etc. These could be starting points for you to explore your passion further and take it to the next level.

d) Outside of school
What sort of activities held by organisations or local communities did you enjoy taking part?

2. Ask people close to you
Ask your parents, elder siblings, relatives or even your childhood buddies to recall the things that you love to do in your younger days, as you might have forgotten. Personally, I couldn’t remember what I loved to do when I was still young. When I asked my father many years ago, he told me that I used to love spending my time looking at pictures of beautiful houses in newspapers and magazines. Whenever I came across a picture of a house that I like, I would tear that page and keep it in my study table drawer. Perhaps that explains my keen passion for properties today! Likewise, my son who is 15  years old now loves visiting the beautiful showhouses of developers. As parent, I will encourage him to find his passion in this area. Who knows, he might become a famous architect or an interior decorator.

What is your money personality?

I have come across many people who have different attitudes towards money. All of us have unique personalities − some characteristics are inborn and some are learnt along life’s journey. Likewise, when it comes to money and real estate investments, we too possess various money personalities. They are:

1. Spenders / Shoppers
These personalities derive great emotional satisfaction from spending money. They need instant gratification and can't resist spending money. Spenders often shop to entertain themselves, even if the items they buy go unused. A sale is simply an excuse to spend money on the pretext of getting a good deal on things that they do not need at the moment.

A well-to-do good friend of mine was shocked to discover, during his house moving, that his wife owned more than 100 pairs of shoes and over 30 handbags! Like most guys, he couldn’t see the need for his wife to own so many pairs of shoes and handbags. As money was not an issue, he didn’t mind his wife buying more new shoes or handbags, provided that she gave her old ones away. He was concerned that his new house was quickly running out of closet space to store the things his wife bought.

Unfortunately, besides being a shopper, his wife was also a hoarder. She didn’t have the heart to give away things that are still fairly new and seldom used. This led to frequent quarrels and my friend decided that the only way out was to build more closet space in his current house and to move to a bigger house a few years later to accommodate his wife’s impulsive shopping habit. It was a small price that he could afford to pay to keep his wife happy.

Advice for Spenders/ Shoppers: Shop a lot less, save a lot more

If you love to spend, it's very likely that you are going to continue doing it. when shopping, try to seek long term value, not just short -term satisfaction.  Before purchasing, ask yourself how much that purchase is going to mean in a year. If the answer is "not much",then forgo the purchase. This way, you can limit your spending to things that you'll actually use. If possible, set a monthly budget and stick to it. In case you over-spend  in a month, make sure that you have the discipline to cut back the following month.

Another suggestion is to cut up any extra credit cards you may have and lower the credit limit  on the ones you use regularly. Give standing instructions to auto-debit your bank account on the due date with the full amount for all your credit cards. This way you will not  be tempted to overspend.

Malay history: What’s missing from the textbooks (2)

The Chinese arrived at least 876 years before Parameswara reached Malacca. Could the Chinese have been the original royal lineage of Brunei?

Also interesting to note is the following:

In Late Yuan Dynasty, China became chaotic, people who lived along the coastal area of Fujian, under the leadership of Ong Sum Ping's siblings, escaped to eastern Kalimantan — they landed at the river mouth.

When they were exhausted, facing a shipping crisis, someone lost their arms. After that, the Kadazans named it as Sungai Kinabatangan — the place where the Chinese lost their arms.

Ong Sum Ping and his sister, and the Chinese people, developed the area of Sungai Kinabatangan and they increased their influence there. With the increase of his prosperity, the natives named him Raja or King. The Chinese named him ‘Chung Ping’ — meaning the General. We can clearly see that Ong Sum Ping controlled Eastern Kalimantan.
“Located the north-western part was the Sultanate Brunei; its southern area was controlled by local Malays (from Palembang) and they were in a state of decline. In the eastern part, they suffered from the invasion of the Muslim Sultan of Sulu. When the new (first) ruler — Sultan Muhammad Shah — ascended to the throne, he asked for the help of Ong Sum Ping. Sultan Muhammad Shah married his daughter to Ong Sum Ping, and titled him as Maharaja Lela. Muhammad Shah also asked his brother to marry the sister of Ong Sum Ping, and titled her as Puteri Kinabatangan. Via these marriages, these two regional powers built a close relationship. Under the cooperation of Ong Sum Ping and the Chinese armies, they fought against the Sulu Muslim invasion, and Brunei was saved from utter collapse...”
Without Chinese help, Brunei and Sabah would have collapsed and fallen to the Muslim pirate Suluks. And the year is the early 1400s. And for the record ‘Kina’ (kee-na) is used by Kadazan Dusun which, similar to ‘Cina’ (chee-na) used by Malay, refer to the Chinese. So, the correct way to say it in today’s context, is to call it CheenaBatangan, and Mount CheenaBalu, or Mount CheenaBaru (had they mispronounced it), and Kota CheenaBalu (to replace the British given name of Jesselton).

Malay history: What’s missing from the textbooks

Brunei has always been known to be one of the earliest Muslim Kingdoms in Southeast Asia. They pride themselves in this fact. All their neighbors pride themselves in this too, and of course, since it is fact, it is irrefutable. Right?

Good. Let’s quickly look at some FACTS then:
It is taught in school textbooks that Pateh Berbai, the brother of Awang Semaun and Awang Alak Betatar, discovered Brunei. Awang Alak Betatar subsequently became Brunei’s first Sultan and was known as Sultan Muhammad Shah. Awang Semaun and Awang Alak Betatar were the famous heroes in Brunei during that time.

Sultan Muhammad Shah was the first Sultan of Brunei. He ruled Brunei from 1363 to 1402. He was the first Muslim ruler of Brunei as a result of his conversion to Islam in 1363 for his marriage to a Johorean-Temasik princess. Prior to conversion to Islam, he was known as Awang Alak Betatar.

He sent a mission to China in 1371 by which his name is recorded in Ming historical record as Mo-ha-mo-sha. Sultan Muhammad Shah died in 1402. Sultan Muhammad Shah was the first Sultan of Brunei. He ruled Brunei from 1363 to 1402. He married the daughter of Iskander, a Johorean-Temasik princess introduced by Bal-Paki, her brother-in-law to be.

So far so good... Oh Really?

Doakan saya...

Sedar tak sedar dah agak lama saya tak menulis.
